[source] it is the rhizome of Smilax bracteata.
[plant morphology] Smilax bracteata, also known as Smilax nigricans.
Climbing woody vines. Rhizome massive, brown. Branches green, with dark brown flat spines. Leaves alternate, ovate oblong, 5-10 cm long, 3-7 cm wide, apex acuminate, base rounded or microcordate, entire; petiole 7-12 mm long, with tendrils above middle. Flowers dioecious, umbels axillary; pedicels shorter than petioles; flowers white or greenish white, perianth segments 4. Berry subglobose, black, with 3 seeds. The flowering period is May. The fruit period is from August to September.
It grows in low mountains, shrubs or valley banks. It is distributed in Shaanxi, Gansu, Hubei, Sichuan, Guizhou and other places.
The rhizome of this plant is also used as Clematis in Shaanxi Province. See "Clematis bar.".
