[chemical constituents] the fruit contains Catalpol, dep-p-hydroxybenzoylcatalpol, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, citric acid and wax. The seeds contain p-hydroxybenzoic acid. β - sitosterol and fatty acids.
[pharmacological action] the water-soluble extract, pericarp and seed extract of Zishi have diuretic effect on mice and rabbits, and increase the discharge of electrolyte. A diuretic glycoside was proposed from catalpa seeds. In the diuretic experiment of rats, the effect of dep-p-hydroxybenzoylcatalpol was stronger than Catalpol. The former was mainly characterized by sodium diuresis, and the latter by chlorine diuresis. The diuretic effect of the two glycosides was weakened in rats with acidic urine, and increased in rats with alkaline urine. Both glycosides showed natriuretic effect in rats with bilateral adrenalectomy. It has no inhibitory effect on carbonic anhydrase and little effect on circulatory system. The toxicity is weak. Its diuretic effect is due to its effect on renal tubules.
