It is a perennial herb with a height of 20-70 cm and a special odor. The roots are thick and long. Stem from the base of four scattered branches, the lower lying, upper oblique, round stem branches with shuttle. Leaves alternate, 2-3 pinnate, basal leaves sessile, usually 3-lobed, lobes lanceolate linear; stipules bristly. Flowers solitary, opposite petiole; white or light yellowish green, ca. 2 cm in diameter; sepals 5; petals 5, obovate oblong; stamens 15, filaments spreading near base; disk cup-shaped; ovary 3-locular, style 3-locular. Capsule globose, 3-lobed, 3-locular. Seeds trigonous, reniform, brown. The flowering period is June. The fruit period is from July to August.
Born in roadsides, river banks, Gobi desert and other arid places. Distributed in Hebei, Shanxi, Inner Mongolia, Ningxia, Shaanxi, Gansu, Qinghai, Xinjiang and other places.
The seeds of this plant (Peganum harmala L.) are also used for medicinal purposes.

[chemical constituents] it contains l-duckbill alkaloid, DL duckbill alkaloid, duckbill ketone alkaloid, deoxyduckbill ketone alkaloid, harmine, deoxyduckbill alkaloid, duckbill alkaloid, duckbill alcohol alkaloid and duckbill amine alkaloid. In addition, it contains duckbill acid.
During the flowering period, the aboveground part contained the largest amount of bio alkali (5.770%), the main component was duckbill alkaloid (2.842%), and the contents of harmine and harmaline were much less. The content of alkaloids in roots was the highest at budding stage (1.920-2.140%) and the end of growing season (1.926-2.310%), and the lowest at flowering stage (1.588-1.697%) and seed maturity stage (1.526-1.874%). The main components of alkaloids in roots were harmine (52-81%) and hameline (15-39%).
There were also leucine glycosides in the seedlings and healing tissues.
