[plant morphology] iris lactiflora (Tang materia medica), also known as Hanpu (Book of rites), Jucao, Zaishou, Sanjian (Ben Jing), Li (Shuowen), MAXIE (Zheng Xuan's notes to book of rites), Malian (Shicao Xiaoji), and licao (compendium).
Perennial herbs, about 25-30 cm high. The rhizome is thick, the root is thin and tough. Leaves basal, linear, 20-40 cm long, 3-6 mm wide, apex acuminate, entire, lower part purplish, hard, smooth, glabrous, parallel veins convex on both sides, 7-10. There are 3 leaflike bracts near the upper end of the stem; the flowers are light blue and purple, 1-3, at the top of the stem, perianth 6, 2 rounds, lower part united into a tube, outer ring spoon shaped, curved outward and drooping, inner ring oblanceolate, erect; stamen 3, closely connected with the outer side of the style, anther long; bee pistil 1, ovary lower, narrow and long, style 3, deeply split, flat, stigma 2-petal-shaped. Capsule fusiform, with, apex slender. Seeds numerous, reddish brown, irregularly rounded, ribbed. The flowering period is from April to June. The fruit ripens from August to September.
Born in the sunny mountains. It is distributed in most areas of China.

[medicinal materials] the dried seeds are flat or irregular oval polyhedron, about 5 mm long and 3-4 mm wide. The surface is reddish brown to dark brown, with yellowish brown or light yellow on the surface. Hilum, apical commissure slightly protruding. It's hard. The endosperm is thick, gray white and horny on the cut section; the embryo is located at one end of the hilum, white and slightly curved. Weak breath, weak taste. It is better to be reddish brown, full and pure.
Mainly produced in Jiangsu, Liaoning, Hebei, Beijing and other places.
In Xinjiang, the seeds of the same genus Iris lactea were used as medicine as iris lactea.

Stir fry the iris seed in the iron pot, take the powder orally, 3 times a day, 5-7g each time, reduce it for children. In addition, use 2 parts of powder and 5 parts of Vaseline to make ointment for external application. 59 cases of bone tuberculosis were observed and treated for 2-8 months. 20 cases were cured and 27 cases were significantly improved. The other results were unknown.
② Contraception
Mash 60 grams of iris seed, add 2 bowls of water to boil it into 1 bowl, add 0.5 Jin or 1 jin of yellow rice wine, cook a little, and divide it into 6 parts with dregs and soup. When menstruation comes, take it twice a day for three days. Or the crushed iris seed is processed into capsules. 50 grams of raw medicine is equivalent to 18 capsules, 3 capsules each time, twice a day. Take it from the first day of menstruation for 3 days. The decoction was used in 200 cases of women of childbearing age, 6 cases were pregnant within one month, 25 cases were observed, 4 cases were pregnant within three months, 7 cases were pregnant within six months. The capsule was used in 220 cases (about 80% of them were lactating women) and 63 cases were pregnant within 3 months. After taking medicine, a few of them have side effects, such as earlier menstruation, more or less menstruation, more or less leucorrhea and so on. Therefore, it is not ideal to use iris seed as a contraceptive.
