[plant morphology] Quercus variabilis, also known as cork oak, coarse oak, white oak.
Deciduous tree, 15-25m high, light gray bark, deep split, thick and soft cork layer, 10 cm thick. Single leaf alternate, elliptic lanceolate or elliptic ovate, 8-15 cm long, 2-5.5 cm wide, apex acuminate, base broadly cuneate or rounded, margin serrate, apex awned, dark green above, with gray white stellate villi below; petiole 1.5-3 cm long. The male inflorescence is at the lower end of the new branch, sepals 2-5-lobed, stamens 4-6; the female inflorescence is at the axil of the new branch, with short stalks. Nut subglobose or ovate, 1.5-2 cm long, cupule with many subulate linear recurved scales. The flowering period is April. The fruit ripens in September.
Born in the bush. Distributed in Hebei, Shandong, Henan, Shanxi, Gansu, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui, Hubei, Hunan, Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan and other places.
