Deciduous, shrubs or climbing vines, 40-80 cm high. Stem nearly cylindric, much branched, hard: branchlets ribbed, without spines. Leaves simple, alternate, ovate, sheathlike, without tendrils. It is 3-6 cm long and 2-4 cm wide. The apex is acute or acuminate. The base is round, truncate or subcordate. It is green on the top and pale white on the bottom. The basal veins are 3-5, both protruding. Peduncle thin, 1-2 cm long, bearing 2-7 flowers, forming umbels; peduncle thin, about 8 mm long; flowers unisexual, monoecious; male perianth 6, long elliptic: stamen 6; female flower smaller, perianth 6, with staminode 6; ovary elliptic, style 3-lobed, involute. The berry is globose, yellow black with white powder, containing 1-3 seeds. The flowering period is from May to June. The fruit period is from July to August.

Most of them are in forest edge or shrub. Distributed in Hebei, Shanxi, Henan, Gansu and other places.

The tubers and roots of this plant are also used as "Clematis" in Gansu Province.
