Annual herb, 0.2 ~ 1 (~ 2) m high. Stem erect, stout, single or much branched, glabrous, nodes swollen. The leaves are alternate, oblong or lanceolate, and vary greatly in size, generally about 10 cm in length and 2 cm in width. The apex is acuminate, the base is cuneate, with dark spots on the top and glandular spots on the bottom. The main veins and margin are covered with thick bristles; the petiole is covered with thick bristles; the stipule sheath is tubular, membranous, transparent, with many veins, light brown, glabrous, upper part truncate, generally without cilia. Panicle consists of several spikes, terminal or axillary, pedicel usually glandular, densely flowered, often drooping; bract funnel-shaped, with several flowers inside; perianth pink or greenish white, usually 4-lobed, glandular, lobes veined, fruiting veins not protruding; style 2, separated from base. Achene ovate, flat, brownish black, glossy, enclosed in persistent perianth.
It is found in roadsides, ditches and river valley wetlands. It is distributed in most parts of the country.

Perennial herbs, 60-90 cm high. The fibrous roots are slightly reddish or purple. Stem prostrate or oblique, 2-branched, glabrous or pubescent, adventitious roots on nodes.
