The body length is about 30 cm. The mouth is short, and the male is black; the female has the upper mouth and the lower mouth is yellow. The iris is brown. The forehead, head and neck are brown; the eyebrows are black; the cheek is white, and the lower edge is black; the chin and throat are white. Black on the back. It is full of eye-shaped white spots, and the tip of the feather is chestnut; the tail feather from the lower back to the center is also black, mixed with wavy narrow lines, and the tip of the outer tail feather is pure black; the shoulder is chestnut; the covert is dark brown, with white spots; the flying feather is dark brown, with white transverse spots, and the innermost flying feather is the same as the shoulder feather. The chest, upper abdomen and upper flank are black and densely covered with eye-shaped white spots, while the lower flank turns white and mixed with black spots; the lower abdomen is brown white. The covert under the tail is brown. Short feet, orange to reddish brown. The color of the female is similar to that of the male, but the black is blunt and brown; the white spots and lines are brown; the lower body turns brown white, mixed with black brown transverse spots.

It often lives in mountain shrubs and grass. It mainly feeds on grains, beans and seeds of other plants. It also eats insects. It is distributed in the southern provinces of China.
