Perennial herbs, up to more than 1 m high. The rhizome is transverse and stout. Stem erect, with edge line and longitudinal groove, 2 to 3 cycles, 3 pinnate, compound leaves alternate, lower leaves larger. Its petioles are elliptic ovate or narrowly ovate, lanceolate, 3.5-9 cm long, 1.5-5.5 cm wide, apex acute, margin 2-3-lobed, lobes notched and irregularly serrated; it is thick papery, glabrous above, white pubescence below along the vein. Inflorescence terminal and axillary, 18-30 cm long, usually single panicle, sometimes with 2-3 short branches at the base, forming a complex raceme; flowers miscellaneous, white, dense, pedicel and inflorescence axis densely brown scaly hairy; perianth oval, caducous; stamens mostly: carpel 2, follicles 6-8 mm long, irregularly square, sparsely white hair, with persistent style at the top; seeds 2-8 Five. The flowering period is from August to September. The fruit period is from October to November.
It grows in the wet grass under the high mountain forest or beside the stream and ditch on the edge of the forest. Distributed in Heilongjiang, Jilin, Liaoning, Inner Mongolia, Hebei, Shaanxi, Gansu, Zhejiang, Sichuan and other places.

[medicinal material] the dried rhizome is irregular, slightly curved, about 20 cm long and 5-9 cm in diameter. The surface is brownish black to black, with transverse texture. There are many large vestiges of stem base above, and many punctate fibrous root marks below and on both sides. It is hard and not easy to break. In the cross section, cambium can be seen, which is brownish black. There are light black longitudinal stripes in the skin. Some wood parts are decayed, salty and hollow, and the skin has rhombic texture. The taste is pungent and bitter.
