[plant morphology] asparagus bidentata
Perennial herbs. The rhizome is short. The roots are clustered, thick and fleshy. The apex is expanded and spindle shaped. The stem is erect, 30-60 cm high, green, cylindrical, hollow, with many branches at the lower part and short internodes at the upper part; the leafy branches are 2-6, clustered, flat, falcate, apex acuminate, the midrib is obvious, green and glossy, 6-8 mm long and 1 mm wide. The leaves degenerate into scalelike, very small, membranous. Flowers heterozygous, solitary or paired in leaf axils; pedicels thin and weak, 10-15 mm long, with a joint in the middle; flowers small, bell shaped, perianth lobes 6; stamens 6, inserted at the base of perianth; pistils 1, ovary 3-locular. Berry, globose, 5-7 mm in diameter, black when ripe.
It grows in wet and thick soil, and is common in grass under the forest. Distributed in Yunnan, Sichuan, Tibet, Shaanxi, Gansu, Shanxi, Henan, Hubei and other places.
[collection] dig in spring and autumn, remove the stems, wash the sediment and dry them in the sun.
[medicinal materials] most of them are clumps of roots, with reed stalks and short dry stems on the head. Each tuberous root is spindle shaped, pointed at both ends, about 3-7 cm long and about 0.7-1.2 cm thick. The appearance is shrunken, grayish brown or tan; after drying, it is mostly shell like. Crisp, easy to break, heart empty less meat, not fully dry, heart sticky white meat. The gas is slightly sour and the taste is numb. It is better to have even root and full heart

The tuberous roots of the same genus Asparagus are also used for medicine.
[chemical constituents] the root of asparagus japonicus contains 60% mucilage. The former is composed of mannose and glucuronic acid (1:1), and the latter is composed of fructose, glucose and mannose (2:8:9).
