Herbs perennial, base lignified, 1-2 m high. The rhizome is thick, transverse, surrounded by dense strip fibrous roots. Stem erect, smooth. Large 2-3-pinnate compound leaves, with long petioles about 18 cm from root to leaf, stem leaf petioles shorter to upper part, base sheath like, without stipules; leaflets ovate or ovate elliptic, 3.5-10 cm long, 1.2-5 cm wide, apex caudate, base broadly cuneate or shallowly cordate, lateral leaflets often oblique, smooth above, sparsely pilose below along the vein, edge doubly serrate. Dioecious, panicle terminal or axillary, inflorescence axis sparsely white soft hair, base with a small subulate bract, flowers small, yellow white, calyx tube cup-shaped, 5-lobed, lobes triangular, petals 5, obovate spoon shaped; stamens in male flowers about 20, longer than petals; staminodes in female flowers 3, erect, ovate. Follicles glabrous, oblong, ca. 3 mm long, calyx lobes persistent, stipe pendulous, brown at maturity. The flowering period is from June to July. The fruiting period is September.
It grows in shady and wet places such as hillside under sparse forest, grass or stream, rock edge, etc. Distributed in Northeast, East China, southwest and Henan, Gansu, Shaanxi, Hunan, Tibet and other places.
