[plant morphology] Melastoma
Shrubs, evergreen, 1-5 m high. Stem densely covered with thick hairs closely attached to scales. Leaves opposite, broad ovate, 5-14 cm long, 3-7 cm wide, apex short pointed, base narrowly cordate, 5-7 main veins, densely covered with close coarse hairs above, densely covered with villous below; petiole 1-2 cm long, purple, covered with coarse hairs. The flowers are large and beautiful, purplish red, usually 3-flowered, sometimes solitary or 5-flowered; bracts ovate to lanceolate, shorter than calyx tube or as long as calyx; calyx densely covered with lanceolate, closely attached scalelike hairs, lobes lanceolate, as long as calyx tube; petals 5; stamens 10, filaments yellowish, 5 of which have purple anthers and extended connectives, the other 5 anthers are yellow, linear, with long connectives Septum not elongated; pistil 1, lower part of ovary connate with calyx tube, upper part densely pilose, 5-locular, ovule numerous, rachis placentate, style purplish red, stigma capitate. Capsule fleshy, oblong, pot shaped, about 1 cm long, covered with appressed scalelike hairs, irregularly dehiscent. Seeds numerous, black. The flowering period is July. The fruiting period is October.
Born on hillside and wilderness. Distributed in Zhejiang, Guangdong, Guangxi, Fujian, Sichuan, Guizhou and other places.
