[plant morphology] Schisandra sphenanthera, also known as Schisandra Emei.
Climbing shrubs. The young shoots of the current year are light green, smooth and glabrous, covered with white powder, pentagonal, with winged membrane on the edges; those more than one year old are purple brown, slightly square to round, narrowly winged or wingless, with pale brown lenticels, conspicuous; bud scales are ovate, persistent at the base of branchlets. Leaves alternate, semileathery; broad ovate or nearly round, 9-11 cm long, 5-8 cm wide, apex acutely caudate or shortly acutely caudate, base cuneate or round, margin with thin teeth; upper green, covered with a little white powder, lower light green, with dense white powder; petiole red, covered with white powder, 2.5-5 cm long. Flowers unisexual, dioecious. Male flowers are solitary in axils of leaves, about 1.5 cm in diameter, white, pedicel slender, 4-5 cm long, with 1 bracteole at the base; sepals 3, round, slightly equal in size, light green or yellow green; petals 3, similar to sepals; stamens mostly, anthers white, introverted. Female flowers on pedicel about 7-8 cm long; calyx and petals are the same as male flowers; ovary is smooth and glabrous, style is very short. The fruit is spherical, red, 4-5mm long, with very short stalks; the seeds are brownish yellow, often semicircular. The flowering period is from May to June.
Born in or near the forest. It is distributed in Sichuan, Hubei, Guizhou and Guangxi.

Climbing shrubs, about 5 meters long. Branchlets cylindrical, reddish brown, glabrous. Leaves elliptic or obovate, 6-9 cm long, 3-6 cm wide, apex acuminate, base cuneate, below pale white, glabrous. Flowers solitary in leaf axils, yellowish green, about 1.5 cm in diameter; stamens 10-15, anthers cuneate obovate, apex concave or truncate. The fruit is red, ovoid, 6-9 mm long.
Distributed in Shanxi, Shaanxi, Gansu, Henan, Anhui, Jiangxi, Hubei, Sichuan, Yunnan, Guangxi and other places.
The fruit of this plant is used as Schisandra chinensis, which is called "South Schisandra chinensis". See "Schisandra chinensis".
