Deciduous shrubs or small trees, about 6 m high. Branchlets round or slightly ribbed, with spiny ends, smooth and glabrous. Leaves opposite or clustered on short branches with short petioles; leaves oblong, obovate to oblong, 2-3 cm long, 1.5 cm wide, apex obtuse, glabrous, glossy. Flowers white, ca. 3 cm in diam. Berry subglobose, ca. 10 cm in diam., brownish yellow to red, septate. The seeds are numerous, enclosed in red or reddish fruit sac. The flowering period is from May to June.

② Double white pomegranate

The shape of this species is the same as that of pomegranate except for double petals.

[herbal medicine] the dried petals are mostly wrinkled and yellow or brownish yellow. After soaking in warm water, the whole body is oval, with blunt and round top, slightly narrow base and broken edge. From the base of petal, the main veins are thick and the lateral veins are small. All of them are brown. Soft, thin and slightly transparent. It is better to have yellow and white color and slight fragrance.
