Perennial woody vines, up to 2 m high, single leaf alternate, leathery, oblong or ovate lanceolate to narrowly lanceolate, 3-10 cm long and 1-2 cm wide, base rounded to broadly cuneate, apex long and acuminate, margin thinly serrated, pale green above, purplish red below, midvein smooth, convex below, lateral veins inconspicuous; petiole about 8 mm long. Flowers small, axillary, yellowish; pedicels short, 5-10 mm long; sepals and petals often indistinguishable, a total of 7-12; stamens 5-15, connate into a ball, filament base slightly combined; carpels many. Berry, scarlet, gathered into drooping spikes of aggregate fruit, flowering from July to September.
Growing on hillsides or in gullies. It is distributed in Hubei, Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan, Shaanxi and other places.
