The leaves are alternate, the leaves in the lower part of the stem are 2-3 odd pinnate compound leaves; the petiole is 10-20 cm long, the base embraces the stem, and the two sides are sheath like; the leaflets are 3-4 pairs, ovate lanceolate, the leaflets are 2 pinnate, the last lobes have unequal obtuse serrations, the last pair of leaflets are petiolate, the last pair of leaflets are nearly sessile; the leaves in the upper part of the stem are nearly sessile. The base is enlarged to form a long ovate sheath and embracing the stem; the leaf blade is thin, dark green above and light green below, glabrous. The compound umbels are terminal or axillary, with 10-15 pedicels of different length and rough surface, without involucre. Perennial herbs, 60-100 cm high. The rhizome is thick and the internodes are very short. The base of stem is usually purple with longitudinal furrows on the surface. The leaves in the lower part of the stem are 3-2-pinnate compound leaves, about 30 cm long, sometimes up to 60 cm long; the petioles are about half of the total length, with thin edges and sheath like base; the leaflets are feathered, the first pair of leaflets in the lower part have petioles, the others are often sessile, the lobes are lanceolate or ovate, the edges have sharp or blunt coarse teeth, and the two sides are glabrous. Compound umbel terminal or axillary, total pedicel 15-20, branching, smooth, no involucre; small involucre linear; calyx teeth 5; petals 5, yellow green, obovate, apex narrow and involute; stamens 5; stylar base protruding, stigma 2.
