Lettuce

Herbs annual or biennial. The stem is erect, smooth and glabrous. When tender, it is stick like and plump like a bamboo shoot. If it is not harvested, it will gradually elongate into a flower stem and blossom on the upper part of the branch. The leaves are clustered at the base, oblong, obovate or ligulate, or lanceolate, with entire or marginal folds, or irregular dentate notches; the cauline leaves are alternate, and the base is auricular. The inflorescence has long peduncle, arranged into terminal panicle flower cluster; involucre is cylindrical, bracts are multilayer, imbricate arrangement; flowers are bisexual, all tongue shaped flowers, tongue apex 5-toothed, yellow; stamen 5; ovary inferior, stigma 2-lobed. Achene ovate, flat, 3 prominent longitudinal ribs on sea surface, apex beaked. Seeds dark brown or gray white. It blooms in summer.

It is cultivated in most parts of the country.

The seeds of this plant (Lactuca sativa L.) are also used for medicinal purposes.

Generally, the varieties of lettuce are white lettuce, flower leaf lettuce, pointed leaf lettuce, purple leaf lettuce and so on, which are different due to their shape and color.
