[plant morphology] calamus chinensis
Perennial twining vines with milk. Root like, light yellow. Leaves opposite; leaves ovate cordate or ovate lanceolate, 5-8 cm long. Apex acute, base cordate, both surfaces smooth or only with short hairs on upper veins. Cyme, axillary, 2-5 cm long; calyx 5-lobed, lobes lanceolate, hairy; corolla 5-lobed, lobes ovate, dark purple. Follicles fusiform, spreading nearly horizontally. There is a long white hair on the top of the seed. The flowering period is from July to August. The fruit period is from September to November.
Growing in the edge of hillside forest or roadside grass. It is distributed in Guizhou, Hunan, Jiangxi, Fujian and Zhejiang,
[chemical constituents] the plants of the same genus contain caryophylline, isocaryophylline and caryophylline, which have antitumor effects.
[pharmacological action] sinomenine has significant anti-tumor effects on adenocarcinoma-755, lymphosarcoma, lymphocytic leukemia P-388 and mouse lymphocytic leukemia L-1210. It has been put into clinical trial. However, it has been found to have irreversible toxicity to the central nervous system, so it is not used.
