Herbs climbing perennial. The root tubers are fleshy, clustered, oblong or fusiform, 4-10 cm long, grayish yellow. The stem is thin, up to 2 meters long, with longitudinal grooves. Leaflike branches 2-3 fascicular axils, linear, flat, 1-2.5 (~ 3) cm long, about 1 mm wide, slightly curved, apex acute. The leaves degenerate into scales, and the scaly leaves on the main stem often turn into recurved short spines. Flowers 1-3 clusters, leaf axils yellowish white or white, drooping; perianth 6, arranged in 2 rings, long ovate or ovate elliptic, about 2 mm long; stamen 6, anther T-shaped; pistil 1, ovary 3-locular, stigma 3-divergent. Berries globose, ca. 6 mm in diam., red when ripe. The flowering period is May.

Born in the wild, but also cultivated in the garden. It is distributed in the middle, northwest, Yangtze River Basin and south of China.

It is mainly produced in Guizhou, Sichuan and Guangxi. In addition, it is also produced in Zhejiang, Yunnan, Shaanxi, Gansu, Anhui, Hubei, Henan, Jiangxi and other places. Guizhou has the highest yield and good quality.

The root tubers of the same genus, asparagus bidentata (see "Tu Bai bu") and asparagus petiolata (distributed in Yunnan), are also used as medicine in a few areas.
