[source] it is the fruit of Chaenomeles sinensis (Thouin) Koehne.
[plant morphology] deciduous shrub or small tree, up to 7 m high, with spinless branches and yellowish pubescence on young branches. The leaves are alternate, elliptic ovate or oblong, 5-8cm long and 2.5-6cm wide, with spiny awn shaped serrations on the edge, glandular spots on the tooth tip, villi when young, flowers solitary in leaf axils; sepals 5; petals 5, light red; stamens numerous; ovary inferior, 5-locular, style 3-5, base connate, pilose. Pear fruit is oblong, up to 15cm long, dark yellow, woody and fragrant. The flowering period is from April to May and the fruiting period is from September to October.
It is commonly cultivated in different places. It is mainly produced in Shaanxi, Shandong, Anhui, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Hubei, Jiangxi and Guangxi.
[picking] in summer and autumn, the fruits are picked when they are green and yellow, and then they are cut lengthwise, scalded in boiling water and dried in the sun.
