Physalis alkekengi
Perennial herbs, 35-100 cm high. Rhizomes transverse. Stem erect, many solitary, unbranched, slightly twisted, surface angular, smooth glabrous. Leaves alternate, usually 2-foliolate on a node; petiole 8-30 mm long; leaf blade ovate to broadly ovate, 4-10.5 cm long, 2-6.5 cm wide, apex acute or acuminate, base cuneate or broadly cuneate, margin with sparse irregular notches, or undulate, smooth glabrous above, few glabrous below. Flowers solitary in leaf axils, pedicel 1-1.5 cm long; flowers white, 1.5-2 cm in diameter; calyx green, campanulate, about 1 cm long, apex 5-lobed, margin and lateral pubescence; corolla campanulate, 5-lobed, lobes broadly ovate, apex acute. Stamens 5, inserted at the base of corolla, anthers oblong, inserted at the base, filaments filiform; ovary superior, ovate, 2-locular, style linear, stigma small, inconspicuous. Berry globose, ca. 1.2 cm in diameter; smooth glabrous, orange red at maturity: persistent calyx enlarged at fruiting, thick membranous, inflated like a lantern, up to 4.5 cm long, 5-angled, orange red or dark red, glabrous, loosely surrounding berry. The seeds are numerous and small. The flowering period is from July to October. The fruit period is from August to November.
Grow in roadside and field grass; also cultivated as ornamental plants. It is distributed in most parts of the country.
