[plant morphology] tetragonum
Woody vines, more than 10 meters long. Stem, branch, petiole sharp quadrangular, tender part broken, often with filamentous juice, stem node, dark purple red or light green. Leaves alternate, ovate, varying in size, 14 cm long and 10 cm wide, apex acute or obtuse, base heart-shaped, margin slightly raised from lateral veins, purple; petiole 6 cm long; tendrils opposite leaves, apex 2 forked, stipules 2, square. Corymbs on top of lateral branches; calyx cup-shaped, green or slightly purplish red; petals 4, oblong ovate, apex purplish red, ca. 3 mm; stamens 4; pistils 1, style conical, stigma entire. Berry fleshy, spherical, about 1 cm in diameter, ripe purple black. The flowering period is from April to May. The fruit period is from November to December.

[herbal medicine] the stem is tetragonal, 50-70 cm long, 5-18 mm in diameter, slightly twisted, with stipules and tendril residues on the nodes, 7-20 cm long internodes, slightly winged on the edges, gray brown to dark brown on the surface, rough, with lenticels and wrinkles. It's tough. The section is irregular, the skin is thin, the xylem is reddish yellow, with dense vessels, the ray of xylem is very narrow, and the pith is purple.
