Subshrub herb, 0.4-1 m high, pubescent. Stem erect, slightly longitudinally ribbed, green when young and red when old. Leaves alternate, lanceolate, 3-15 cm long, 1-2.5 cm wide, apex acuminate, base narrower; petiole short or absent. Flowers axillary, sessile or nearly absent; calyx lobes 4, ovate, 6-7 mm long, with 3 veins; petals 4, yellow, obovate, 8-10 mm long, apex obtuse or slightly concave, with 4 pairs of obvious veins; stamens 8; ovary 4-locular. Capsule cylindrical, green or lavender, 2-5 cm long, about 5 mm in diameter, hairy, 8-ribbed, sepals persistent; seeds numerous, subglobose, seed ridge distinct. The flowering period is from July to October.
Born in an open and humid place. It is distributed from southwest to east of China.
