[animal morphology] shad

The body is oblong and laterally flat. It is about 24 cm in length and over 50 cm in size. The anterior end of the mandible is slightly obtuse, the posterior end of the mandible is slightly oblique, and the mouth of the mandible is long. The gill rakes are fine and dense. The scales are large and thin, with fine lines on them, without lateral lines, with 41-47 longitudinal scales and 16-17 transverse scales. The abdomen is narrow, and there are large and sharp scales on the ventral surface, arranged into serrated edges. The front of the ventral fin is 17-19, and the back of the ventral fin is 12-15. The ventral fin is very small, and there are large and long axillary scales at the base of pectoral fin and ventral fin. The dorsal fin is 17-18, the starting point is opposite to the ventral fin. The anal fin is 18-20. Caudal fin deeply forked, covered with scales. The rest back and head are grayish black, the upper side is slightly blue-green luster, the lower side and abdomen are silvery white, the abdominal fins and gluteal fins are grayish white, and the edge of caudal fin and the base of dorsal fin are pale black.

Shad spawns in the middle and lower reaches of Jianghe River during the reproductive season from April to June. The food is mainly plankton and sometimes other organic matter. It is distributed in the South China Sea and East China Sea, and also in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, Pearl River and Qiantang River.
