[source] it is the tender stem of Phragmites australis. For plant morphology, please refer to "reed root".

[collection] in summer and autumn.

[chemical composition] it contains 38.64-40.98% cellulose, 17.27-19.66% pentosan, 32.42-30.36% lignin, 2.20-2.00% ash and 9.47-7.00% moisture.

Sweet, cold and nontoxic.

[meridian tropism] into the heart and lung.

[usage and dosage] oral administration: decoction, 0.5-1 Liang (2-4 Liang fresh).

[selected formula] cough has slight heat, upset, heart nail wrong, is for lung carbuncle: reed stem two liters (cut, with water two Dou, boil five liters, to dross), coix seed half liter, Huairen 30 pieces, melon half liter. Finely cut, take reed juice, boil two liters, take one liter, when you see spitting pus and blood. (Qian Jin Fang Wei Jing Tang)
