[plant morphology] pearl lotus, also known as Manglietia, kudzu and Bingfen tree.
Evergreen climbing vines. Young branches yellowish brown or purplish brown, brown pilose at first, glabrous later, with longitudinal furrows. Single leaf alternate; leathery, long elliptic, lanceolate or long ovate, 6-21 cm long, 2-6 cm wide, base rounded, apex pointed or short caudate, entire, pubescent below, lateral veins 7-11 pairs, protruding below; petiole stout, 1-2 cm long; stipules about 8 mm long, pubescent at first, caducous. Flowers unisexual, numerous, inserted on the inner wall of fleshy receptacle, receptacle single or paired axillary, sessile or shortly petiolate, globose, ca. 1.5 cm in diam., pubescent, glabrous; bracts 3, broadly triangular; male flowers with long pedicels, perianth 4, stamens 2. Achenes are small. The flowering period is from March to October (Yunnan).
Growing in dense forests or shrubs in valleys or waterside. It is distributed in East China, South China and southwest China.
