The body is nearly rectangular and laterally flat, with the dorsal and ventral margins convex in front and low in rear. It is about 30 cm long. The head is large and flat, and the snout is round and blunt. The eyes are equal in size and superior in lateral position. There are 2 nostrils on each side. The anterior nostril is round and small, and the posterior nostril is long and large, close to the eye. The mouth is anterior, broad and oblique. The upper jaw is equal to the lower jaw, and the lip is thin. The edge of the anterior operculum is serrate, and the posterior end of the operculum has a flat spine. The branchial foramen are large and the operculum is not connected with isthmus. Gill harrow is longer. The scales are pectinate with 57 lateral shallow scales; the scales below the lateral line are larger than those above the lateral line. More than 2 / 3 of dorsal fin and gluteal fin are covered with small round scales. The lateral line is curved in the front and straight in the rear. The origin of dorsal fin Ⅷ - Ⅹ 31 is above the origin of pectoral fin. The anal fin Ⅱ 9 starts from the middle of the dorsal fin, and the pectoral fin Ⅱ 15 starts from behind the gill cap. The ventral fin is smaller than the pectoral fin. Caudal fin cuneate. The dorsal side of the body is grayish yellow, and the lower side is golden; the dorsal and caudal fins are grayish yellow, and the pectoral, abdominal and gluteal fins are yellow.

Most of them are active in the middle and lower layers of the sea and have migratory habits. It is distributed in the East China Sea and the South China Sea; Zhoushan archipelago in Zhejiang Province is the most, while it is rare in the Yellow Sea.
