[plant morphology] 1. Perennial herbs with thick yellow roots. Stem erect, about 1 meter high. The root leaves are tufted, with long stalks. The leaves are long elliptic, 10-25 cm long and 4-10 cm wide, with blunt apex, round or wedge-shaped base and wavy margin. The stem leaves are small, with short stalks. Raceme terminal, each node clusters slightly drooping; perianth 6, light green, outer wheel 3 pieces of expansion, inner wheel 3 pieces of fruiting quilt; perianth broadly ovate, with obvious reticulation, the back with an ovate verrucous process, its surface with fine reticulation, edge with irregular micro teeth; stamens 6, in 3 pairs; ovary with edge, 1 room, 1 ovule, style 3, stigma cleft. Achene triangular, apex acute, angular sharp, ca. 2 mm, brown, shiny. There are 3 pieces of enlarged pericarp. The flowering period is April. The fruit ripens in May.
It is found in the wild, near the mountain or wetland. It is distributed in Northeast China, North China, East China, central China and South China.
② Nepalese sheep hoof, also known as: niuerhuangcao, Nepalese Rumex, niuerrhubarb.
Perennial herbs with thick roots. The stem is round, shallowly ribbed, 0.7-1.5 m high, erect. The stem leaves are oblong, ovate, oblong to triangular ovate, 20-40 cm long and 3-5 cm wide, or larger, with short apex, heart-shaped or round base, irregular undulating margin, and occasionally a few leaves mixed in inflorescence at the upper part. Raceme, distance between clusters, obvious joint in the middle of pedicel; perianth 6, 3 inner whorls, expanded into perianth, oval, net vein prominent and obvious, long oval verrucous process in the center, edge with needlelike teeth, about 10 on each side, teeth end in hook shape; stamen 6; ovary triangular, style 3, stigma fimbriate. They like to live on roadsides and ditches in low mountain and warm areas. It is distributed in the middle and southwest of China.
The leaves and fruits of the above two plants are also used for medicine.

[chemical constituents] the root contains rhein, emodin and nepodenyl-3-methylnaphthalene.
The plant also contains a hypoglycemic component (melting point 103-104 ℃).
[pharmacological action] the tincture has certain inhibitory effect on many pathogenic fungi in vitro. When the root (species not identified) decoction was injected into chicken embryo after direct contact with influenza A virus in vitro, it could prevent infection, and allantoic fluid protein could greatly reduce this effect. The results showed that the alcohol extract from the decoction of Bauhinia chinensis (unidentified species) had inhibitory effect on the dehydrogenase of blood cells in patients with acute lymphocytic leukemia, acute monocytic leukemia and acute myelocytic leukemia (test tube methylene blue decolorization method), and had certain inhibitory effect on the respiration of white blood cells in the former two (Warner respirator method). The alcohol extract of Rumex from the same plant group has a lasting and central effect on reducing blood pressure in animals. Similar to rhubarb, small dose of rhubarb has astringent effect, large dose of rhubarb has laxative effect, and it can reflexively promote cholestasis, and also has some hemostatic effects.
