Evergreen shrubs or small trees, up to 7 meters high, bark gray white. Leaves opposite, leathery, elliptic or oblong lanceolate, 3-8 cm long, apex acute or acuminate, base cuneate, entire or acutely serrate, veins 6-8 pairs, protruding downward; petiole short. Flowers clustered in leaf axils, dioecious, with slender pedicels; calyx 4-lobed, lobes dentate; corolla 4-lobed, lobes long elliptic, white or yellow, fragrant; male flowers with stamens 2, hidden in corolla; female flowers with pistil 1, style cylindrical, stigma capitate, ovary 2-locular. The drupe is oblong and contains one seed. The flowering period is from September to October.

It is cultivated in most areas of China.
