Deciduous shrubs or trees, up to 8 m in height. Stem erect, usually needled. 2 or 3 odd pinnate compound leaves, 40-80 cm long, pinnae with 5-11 leaflets, another pair of leaflets at the base, ovate to broadly ovate, 5-12 cm long or longer, 3-8 cm wide, apex pointed or acuminate, margin serrulate, base asymmetric, round or heart-shaped, coarser above, villous below, densely covered with light brown long hairs along veins. Inflorescence large, paniculate, composed of many umbels, 50 cm long, densely covered with brown short hairs; pedicel thin, hairy, with membranous lanceolate bracteoles at the base; calyx campanulate, apex 5-toothed; petals 5, white, triangular ovate; stamens 5; ovary inferior, 5-locular, style 5, free. Berry shaped drupe, subglobose. 5-ribbed, persistent style, purple black when ripe. The flowering period is from July to August. The fruit period is from September to October.
Born in the valley, forest edge, hillside. It is distributed in Hebei, Shandong, Henan, Shaanxi, Gansu, Anhui, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Hunan, Hubei, Jiangxi, Fujian, Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan, etc.

The root bark and stem bark of its variety huanghuamu (also known as langyabang and wulangtou) are also used as medicine in Ningxia, with the same efficacy. The differences are as follows: there are few spines on the stem; the leaves are grayish white; the leaf surface is only sparsely pilose on the midrib; the main axis of the rachis is nearly smooth; the flowers are yellow.
