[plant morphology] yam
Woody vines, several meters long. Branches cylindrical, slightly angulate, glabrous, nodes often with adventitious roots. Leaves alternate, papery or nearly leathery, elliptic, oblong or ovate lanceolate, 6-12 cm long, 2.5-4.5 cm wide, apex acute or acuminate, base gradually narrow or cuneate, sometimes obviously asymmetric, glabrous on both sides or covered with very thin pubescence below, veins 5-7; petiole 5-8 mm long, stipule scar beyond the middle of petiole. Flowers unisexual, dioecious; spikes opposite leaves; bracts suborbicular, sessile, shield shaped; flowers small, yellowish green; stamens 2, filaments short; ovary sessile, stigma 4-lobed, rare 3-lobed. Berry globose, yellow, 2.5-3 mm in diameter. The flowering period is from April to July. Born in the forest, often climbing on trees or stones. It is distributed in the south of China.
