[plant morphology] Celosia argentea

Annual herbs, 60-80 cm high, glabrous. Stems erect, green or reddish purple, usually branched. Leaves alternate; lanceolate or elliptic lanceolate, 5-9 turns long, 1-3 cm wide, apex acuminate, base extended into petiole, entire. Spikes are solitary at the top of stem or the end of branches, cylindrical or panicle shaped, 3-10 cm long; flowers are dense, light red at first and silver white later; each flower has 3 dry membranous bracts; perianth 5, dry membranous, oblong lanceolate; stamens 5, anthers pink, T-shaped; ovary oblong, style linear, red, stigma 2-lobed. The utricle is spherical and covered with cracks; the seeds are several, oblate, hard, black and glossy. The flowering period is from May to July. The fruit period is from July to September.

It grows on loose soil such as roadside, gully, beach and sand dune, and is also cultivated. There are wild or cultivated plants in most areas of China.
