[plant morphology] evergreen tree, 10-20m high. Bark grayish brown to reddish brown, flaking irregularly when old; branchlets opposite, with persistent bud scales at base. The winter buds are terminal, often 3 juxtaposed. The leaves are spirally arranged in two rows, sparsely spreading horizontally, linear lanceolate, slightly curved, 3.5-13mm in length and 3-4.5mm in width. The upper part is gradually narrowed, the apex is gradually pointed, the base is gradually narrowed, cuneate or broadly cuneate, and the lower stomata are white, 3-5 times wider than the green edge. The male flower has 6-16 stamens and 1 bract at the base. The female flower has a long stalk and grows in the axil of the lower part of the branch. It is composed of nine pairs of opposite bracts. Each bract has two upright embryo bulbs. The seeds are green, drupe shaped, the exotesta fleshy, purple or purplish red when ripe, and the endocarp hard.
