Trees, up to 10 m high. The bark is brown. Leaves papery, oblong to oblong elliptic, 8-25 cm long, 5-15 cm wide, apex acuminate or obtuse, base obtuse, bald; petiole 2.5-5 cm long. Panicle drooping, 8-28 cm long; flowers miscellaneous, without corolla; calyx pink, 5-lobed to middle, lobes triangular, pubescent; stamen style weak, curved; female flowers few, ovary hairy, petiolate, 5-lobed, style curved. Very leathery, ovoid, 4-8 cm long, 2.5-3.5 cm wide, beaked, dark red at maturity, covered with short villi. Seeds 1-5, ellipsoid, dark chestnut. The flowering period is May.
