The body is slightly cylindrical, the tail is flat, the abdomen is round, without ventral ribs. The big fish is more than 1 meter long. The head is slightly flat. Mouth end position, horseshoe shape. The length of the snout is longer than the diameter of the eye, and the length of the epiglottis is longer than that of the mandible. They live in the middle and lower layers of rivers and lakes. They mainly feed on mollusks such as mussels, clams and snails, as well as shrimp and insect larvae. The spawning period is generally from May to July. It overwinters deep in the river bed in winter. It is mainly distributed in the plain area to the south of the Yangtze River and less in North China. It is one of the fish culture in China.
