Branches cylindrical, axillary angle wide open, nearly horizontal extension, alternate, opposite, partial, or forked branches, the top is often thin, surrounded by verrucous processes. The protuberances of the upper part of the branches are dense, and those of the lower part are sparse. Internal structure: the outer 2-3 layers of cortex are smaller, and the inner layer is gradually larger parenchyma cells, and there are filaments in the center of medulla. Tetrasporangium is aggregated. The capsule is hemispherical and protrudes from the surface of the alga.

The algae are yellowish green to purplish red, dark red on the abdomen, lying flat, with overlapping branches and tangled into clumps about 10-20 cm in diameter. The branches are cylindrical or slightly compressed, 5-10 mm wide, bifurcated or occasionally trigeminal or quad branched, with papillary or conic protuberances on the surface, low or unobvious papillary protuberances on the older branches, and few ventral protuberances. There are many fixators on the ventral surface of the algal body. Some of them have a disk-shaped fixator on the top of the longer branchlets, which is attached to other branches, making the algal body to form a mass. The shape of this species is variable. It is very large, with internal structure, 2-3 layers of cortex; the medulla is thick, with many small cells scattered.
