Herbs perennial, erect or obliquely inclined, or decumbent below and apically extended, usually setose. The taproot is thick and fertile, conical. Leaves opposite, ovate or elliptic lanceolate, 3.5-7 cm long, 1-2 cm wide, apex obtuse or acuminate, base rounded to subcordate, entire, basal veins 3, reticulate veins obvious on the back of leaves, setose, rough above, or setose; sessile or shortly stipitate; stipules broadly ovate. Flowers small, unisexual, monoecious, clustered in leaf axils, yellowish green; male perianth lobes 3-5, arranged in a pinch like manner in the bud, lobes sharply curved, with transverse fold on the back, forming a ring, with setae on the ring, stamen 5; female calyx tubular, stigma subulate, achene broad ovate, apex pointed, longitudinally convex, black, smooth. The flowering period is from July to August.
