[plant morphology] Gracilaria Ningbo
Shrub, 2 m high. Bark flaking; branches hollow, branchlets sparsely stellate hair. Leaves opposite; short petiole; leaf blade narrowly ovate or lanceolate, 3-8.5 cm long, 1-3 cm wide, apex acuminate, base broadly cuneate or obtuse, margin denticulate, sparsely stellate hairy above, densely white stellate hairy below. Inflorescence conic, often at the top of lateral branches, 5-12 cm long, flowers mostly, with stellate hairs; calyx simple 1.5-2 mm long, lobes 5, triangular; petals 5, white, oblong obovate, 5-8 mm long; stamens 10, different in length, shorter than petals, upper part of filament has 2 teeth; ovary lower, style 3-4. Capsule subglobose, 3-4 mm in diameter. The flowering period is from May to June. The fruit period is from September to October.
It grows on the hillside thickets, beside streams, roadsides and rocks. Distributed in Fujian, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Anhui and other places.
It is pungent and cold.

[selection] 1. To treat malaria: grind the roots or leaves of Cotinus orientalis for five to six cents, mix them with one to three eggs, fry them into light egg cakes, and eat them an hour before they get cold; or take them with only one or two leaves.
