[plant morphology] Artemisia ordosica
Perennial herb, stem erect, height 60-90 cm. Leaves alternate; leaves below middle part of stem, base cuneate, apex pinnately 3-lobed, middle lobe wider and pinnately 3-lobed; leaves above middle part linear, entire; leaves green on both sides, glabrous. Head inflorescence, arranged in panicle shape, each head is spherical, about 1.5 mm in diameter; involucre is spherical, bracts are 3-4 layers, outer bracts are smaller, ovate, inner bracts are elliptic, back central part is green, margin membranous; receptacle is spherical, supernumerary bisexual flower and female flower, corolla is tubular; female flower is located in the periphery of receptacle, there is only one pistil and two stigmas in the center of corolla The flower is bisexual in the center, with 5-lobed corolla apex; 5 stamens, with anthers connate around the stigma; 1 pistil, in the center, with stigma capitate. Achenes elliptic, glabrous. The flowering period is from September to October.
Growing on hillside, roadside or wasteland. It is distributed in most areas of China.

Another variant of this plant, rhinoceros wormwood, is also used as medicine. Leaves linear or deeply lobed, lobes broadly pinnate or anterior. It is distributed all over Sichuan.

[medicinal material] the dried whole grass has cylindrical stem, 1-3 mm in diameter, black brown or brown surface, hard texture, fibrous surface, yellow white, and white loose pith in the center. The remaining leaves are yellowish green to brownish black, mostly broken, wrinkled and curly, brittle and easy to take off. The inflorescence is yellowish green, and there are several long oval brown seeds in the bracts. It is fragrant and slightly bitter.
Mainly produced in Jiangsu, Sichuan and other places.

[chemical constituents] the whole herb contains volatile oil, including gabalene, farnesyl acetate, caryophyllene, tricyclic stigmarcene, β - CARENE, ε -, δ - and γ - pipercene; in addition, it contains α - and β - pinene, camphene, limonene, 1,8-cineole, ascarisone, α - platycladinone, ascarisol and β - Bourbon Geranium.
[pharmacological action] the ethanol or acetone extract of the whole herb has anti Trichophyton rubrum effect (in vitro).
