Astilbe
Perennial erect herbs, 45-60 cm high, rhizome thick. The basal leaves are 2-3 cycles and 3-compound leaves. The leaflets are ovate to long elliptic ovate, 3-10.5 cm long and 2-5 cm wide. The apex is sharp, the base is round, the two sides are asymmetric, the edge has sharp double serrations, and both sides have setae, especially on the veins. The stem is erect, 30-50 cm high, with scaly hairs at the lower part and brown villous at the upper part. The flowers are almost sessile, forming narrow panicles; calyx tube is shallow cup-shaped, 5-lobed, yellow; petals are 5, white or purple, about 4 times as long as the calyx; stamens are 10, filaments are cyan purple, anthers are cyan, beige after maturity; carpels are 2, free, base united, ovary semi superior. Follicles with many seeds. The flowering period is from June to July. The fruiting period is August.
Most of them grow in the sparse forest or grass on the hillside. It is distributed in Liaoning, Hebei, Shanxi, Shandong, Henan, Shaanxi, Gansu, Anhui, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Hubei, Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan, etc.
The plant of the same genus is very similar to this species, but the plant is larger, up to 3 feet high. Leaflet apex suddenly narrow for long pointed head, inflorescence glandular hair, flowers white or light red. It has the same effect as Astilbe. It is distributed all over the south of the Yangtze River.

[chemical constituents] the whole plant contains hydrocyanic acid. Flowers contain quercetin. Astilus contains 2-hydroxyphenylacetic acid.
