Culm erect, up to 4 m high, cylindric, about 15 mm in diameter. The culm is powdery when young, especially under the sheath ring. There are usually brown sheath residues on the sheath ring; the culm ring is not very prominent. Sheath paper leathery, slender triangular, withered yellow, with brown or white small hairs; sheath ear small, with several erect brown hairs; sheath tongue truncated flat head, edge densely ciliated; sheath leaf slender lanceolate, 4-11 cm long, 3-5 mm wide, green when young, multi veined. The main culm has 3-6 branches per node, 1-3 leafy twigs on one node and 2-4 leaves on the top. Leaf sheaths hay colored, linear lanceolate; ligule truncated. The leaf blade is lanceolate, 8-20 cm long and 10-28 mm wide, with 4-8 pairs of secondary veins, 4-8 pairs of small transverse veins, and the margin is serrate; the petiole is 2-7 mm long. The base of flower branch is surrounded by bracts, on which racemes grow; spikelets contain 8-12 flowers, green; 3-5 flowers; lemma ovate lanceolate, 8-11 mm long, with longitudinal veins and small transverse veins, apex sharp, glabrous or upper margin hairy; palea is as long as lemma or longer, with cilia at ridge and top; perianth 3, ovate; stamens 3, anther yellow; ovary narrow, glabrous, The apex splits into 3 styles and the stigma is feathery.
