Herbs biennial, up to 1 m tall. Basal leaves obovate, long elliptic to broadly obovate, 30-60 cm long, thin and veined, margin undulate, only with indistinct teeth, middle rib broad, pale, extending downward; petiole white, margin with notched broad thin wings; heart leaves densely wrapped into cylindrical or elliptic leaf balls; stem leaf base embracing stem or petiole. Inflorescence racemose; sepals 4; petals 4, yellow; stamens 6; pistil is composed of 2 carpels, ovary superior, stigma capitate. The long horned fruit is short and strong, 3-6 cm long. The seeds are brown to dark brown. The flowering period is spring and summer.
It is cultivated in Hebei, Shandong, Jiangsu and Zhejiang. There are many varieties of Chinese cabbage, such as Shandong Chinese cabbage and Zhejiang yellow sprout
