Evergreen shrubs, up to 4 meters high. Root cylindrical, orange yellow, phloem with silver white latex. Branchlets cylindrical, gray green, young branches green, ribbed. Leaves opposite, leathery, obovate oblong, 4.5-13 cm long, 3-6 cm wide, apex acuminate or short, base broadly cuneate, margin serrate. Cymes axillary, sparse, total pedicel 1-3 cm long; flowers large, white green, about 2 cm in diameter. Capsule red, 4-ribbed. The seed is black and the aril is orange yellow. It blooms in summer.
It grows in sparse forests on hillsides or on rocky slopes of river valleys. It is distributed in Yunnan and other places.
