Evergreen shrubs or small trees, 4-10m high. Leaf blade thick leathery, elliptic, ovate or broadly ovate, 5-8 cm long and 3-5 cm wide, base usually broadly cuneate, apex acuminate or short tail pointed, glabrous above, glossy below, sparsely pilose below. Flowers unisexual, dioecious; umbels axillary, solitary or paired, with short pedicels; bracts hairy, caducous; flowers yellow, 4.5-8 mm in diam., hairy; male perianth lobes 6, ovate, ca. 2.5 mm long; stamens 9, anthers 2-locular, fully intropetaled, drupe ovate, ca. 8 mm long, red at maturity, in a small perianth cup. The flowering period is from March to April. The fruit period is from September to October.
It grows in the open forest in the lower part of hills and mountains. It is distributed in Yunnan, Sichuan, Hubei, Hunan, Guangdong, Guangxi and Taiwan.
