[plant morphology] Huanglan
Evergreen tree, up to 20 meters high, twigs and petioles covered with yellowish flat pubescence, alternate leaves, thin leathery, lanceolate ovate or lanceolate oblong, 10-20 cm long and 5-7 cm wide, apex long acuminate or nearly caudate, base cuneate; petiole 2-4 cm long; Stipule scar above middle of petiole. Flowers solitary, leaves false, orange yellow, very fragrant; perianth segments 15-20, lanceolate; apex of stamen connective protruding long pointed; petiole of pistil group about 3 mm long. The aggregate fruit is 7-16 cm long, very obovate oblong, with white spots outside. The seeds have red aril.
Often cultivated in the village, garden. Distributed in Yunnan, Guangdong, Guangxi, Fujian and other places.

[collection] all year round. Slice and dry in the sun.
[chemical constituents] the root contains 0.3% parthenolide. The bark contains yellow heart alkaloid, liriodendrine, Magnolia alkaloid and β - sitosterol.
[pharmacological action] huangxinshuning has significant antibacterial effect on Staphylococcus, Salmonella, Mycobacterium and Bacillus subtilis.
It is cool in nature and bitter in taste.
Functions and indications: dispel wind and dampness, and benefit the throat.
