[plant morphology] Artemisia annua
Herbs annual, up to 1.5 m tall, all nearly glabrous. Stem erect, cylindrical, surface with longitudinal shallow groove, green when young, yellow when old; lower part lignified, upper part branched. Stems and leaves alternate; 3-pinnatifid, lobes apex pointed, green above, yellow green below, narrow wings on both sides of the leaf axis, leaves on the upper part of the stem, gradually smaller upward, split more finely. The head is spherical, drooping, arranged into a pyramid shaped panicle with leaves, several densely distributed in the upper part of the whole plant; each head has a short petiole, with or without linear bracts at the base; the involucre is smooth and glabrous, bracts are 2-3 layers, the central part of the back is green, the edge is yellowish, membranous and transparent; the receptacle is rectangular, the flowers are tubular, yellow, The outer part is a female flower with only one pistil; the central part is a bisexual flower with 5 lobed corolla apex and 5 stamens. The anthers are connate and the filaments are thin and short. It is inserted in the middle of the inner surface of the corolla tube with 1 pistil. The style is filiform and the stigma is 2-lobed and forked. Achenes ovate, minute, light brown, with raised longitudinal stripes on the surface. The flowering period is from August to October. The fruit period is from October to November.

[medicinal material] dried whole grass, about 60-100 cm long. The stem is cylindrical, light brown or grayish brown on the surface, with longitudinal ridges, hard texture, rough fracture section, white pith in the center, tender branches with many leaves, brittle and fragile. The leaves of branches with ear or inflorescence mostly fall off, and the inflorescence only has small bulbous brown yellow bracts, such as roe, which are brittle and fragile.
