[plant morphology] gourd

Climbing herbs annual, hirsute; tendrils branched. The leaves are alternate, heart-shaped to kidney shaped, 10-40 cm long, slightly equal in width and length, slightly angular or 3-lobed, apex short pointed or obtuse, margin short toothed, base heart-shaped; petiole 5-30 cm long, apex with 2 glandular teeth. The male flowers have long petioles, which are longer than the petioles; the female flowers have short petioles. Calyx 2-3 cm long, calyx funnel-shaped, 5-lobed, teeth narrowly triangular, pilose; petals 5, white, broadly ovate or obovate, 3-4 cm long, 2-3 cm wide, margin wrinkled. The ovary of female flower is oval, villous, style short, stigma 3, each 2-lobed. The fruit is obovate, oblong or rod-shaped. It is soft and green when tender. After ripening, the skin becomes hard and white or yellow. Seeds numerous, white, obovate, oblong, apex truncate or 2-horned. The flowering period is June. The fruiting period is July.

It is cultivated in most parts of the country.

[function indications] diuretic, heat clearing, thirst quenching, antipyretic. Treatment of edema, abdominal distension, fever, thirst, sore poison.

[usage and dosage] oral administration: decoction, fresh 2-4 Liang; or burning and storage. External use: burn, deposit, grind and apply.

[taboo] Qian Jin Shi Zhi: "Bian que Yun, those suffering from foot Qi deficiency and distention, should not eat it. "
