Perennial herbs. Culms clustered, triangular, up to 40 cm tall. Leaf sheath long; leaf linear, 3-25 cm long, 1-2 mm wide; bracts short, tubular, with rust veins. Flowers unisexual, monoecious; inflorescence with 3-6 spikelets; male spikelets inserted on the stem tip, scales ovate lanceolate, with rust veins, margin membranous, stamens 3; pistil spikelets lateral, scales oblong ovate, with rust veins, apex protruding into spines. Bracts ovate triangular, veined, sparsely pilose. Nutlets triangular, brown, stigma 3-lobed. The flowering period is from February to March.
It grows on the hillside or roadside under the forest. It is distributed in Northeast, East, central and southwest China.
