[plant morphology] Alpinia officinarum, also known as cardamom fragrans (guihaiyuhengzhi).
Perennial herbs, 1-2 m high. Rhizome stout, light brown red. Leaves almost sessile; leaf blade narrowly oblong, about 40 cm long, about 7 cm wide, apex acute, base cuneate, leaf margin thick membranous ciliate, below by sparse or glabrous, ligule inconspicuous or short triangular ovate. Terminal loose panicle, 30 cm long; involucre linear, 18 cm long, 2 cm wide, pubescent outside; pedicel erect, pubescent; bracteoles narrowly oblong, 7-20 mm long; calyx tubular, 4-8 mm long, 3-lobed; corolla tubular, 1 cm long, lobes 3, linear oblong, 2 cm long, apex cucullate; labellum spatulate, 2.2 cm long M, sinuate; margin notched, white, with light pink longitudinal stripes; lateral staminodes 1, needlelike, anther connective apex with caudate appendage, filaments slender oblate, ca. 1.5 cm long; ovary inferior, 3-locular, style slender, stigma slightly inflated, apex depressed, ciliate. Capsule fleshy, oblong or ovoid, ca. 9 mm in diam., calyx persistent, red at maturity. 1-5 seeds, fragrant. The flowering period is from June to July. The fruit period is from July to August.
It grows in mountain streams and shrubs. It is distributed in Guangdong, Guangxi, Yunnan and Taiwan.

[collection] from February to March, the rhizomes were collected, washed and dried. Or slice and dry in the sun.
[medicinal material] the dry rhizome is cylindrical, multi branched, 8-12 cm long and 2-3 cm in diameter. The surface is reddish brown or dark purple, with longitudinal wrinkles, wavy yellowish leaf marks, forming links, internodes 3-6 mm long, and fibrous root marks on the lower side of rhizome. It is tough and not easy to break. The cross section is fibrous and light yellow. The skin accounts for 2 / 3. The endodermis is obvious and the vascular bundle stars can be seen. The wood is often separated from the bark and has a dark color. It's fragrant and spicy.
It is produced in Guangxi.
