Deciduous shrub, about 1 m high. Many branched, full of short spines, spines in pairs at the base of leaves. Leaves alternate, odd pinnate compound, inserted between two spines; petiole 1.5-2.5 cm long, striated; stipules linear, most connected to petiole, margin with long spines and cilia; leaflets usually 7-11, opposite, long obovate to elliptic, margin serrate, apex pointed or rounded, base broadly cuneate, both surfaces glabrous; sessile. The fruit is globular, densely spiny, yellow at maturity, containing many bony achenes, ovoid, with tufted hairs at the apex. The flowering period is from April to July.

It grows near ditches, roadsides or shrubs in middle and low mountain areas. It is distributed in Jiangsu, Hubei, Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan, Guangdong and other places.
