Deciduous shrub, about 1 m high. Many branched, full of short spines, spines in pairs at the base of leaves. Leaves alternate, odd pinnate compound, inserted between two spines; petiole 1.5-2.5 cm long, striated; stipules linear, most connected to petiole, margin with long spines and cilia; leaflets usually 7-11, opposite, long obovate to elliptic, margin serrate, apex pointed or rounded, base broadly cuneate, both surfaces glabrous; sessile. Flowers bisexual, single at the top of branchlets, light red and fragrant; calyx 5, base connected to form a simple shape, surrounded by pistils, the upper end expanded into a disk, the surface is densely covered with slender needles; petal 5, broadly obovate, top concave, stamens many, attached to the periphery of the disk, hairy, growing out of the calyx tube mouth; pistils many, attached to the base of calyx tube, stigma capitate. The fruit is globular, densely spiny, yellow at maturity, containing many bony achenes, ovoid, with tufted hairs at the apex. The flowering period is from April to July.
It grows near ditches, roadsides or shrubs in middle and low mountain areas. It is distributed in Jiangsu, Hubei, Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan, Guangdong and other places.
